November 24, 2015

Today 87 students and 11 teachers and volunteers from
Mrs. Cooper, Ms. Patton, Ms. Quilley and Mr. Russel's classes had the
wonderful opportunity to hear a performance of Beatrix Potter put on by
the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. These classes were chosen, because
they have music during the time of the performance.

Thanks to a generous sponsor, and Ms. Rosabel Choi (Manager, Education
and Community Outreach at the CPO) we were able to attend the concert at
the new theatre at Mt. Royal University. Everyone enjoyed this event
tremendously.

Even though the roads and traffic made us late, we want to thank the
staff at the CPO and Mt. Royal who were able to accommodate us for the
next performance and give us a place to stay and be comfortable.

On a lovely side note, Mrs. Marina Mosenz was Mrs. Jones and Mrs.
McBride's substitute teacher for the day. Many students remembered her
from when she covered for Mrs. McBride's maternity leave in November of
2013, until she had her own baby in May of 2014.

Fortunately, as a follow up to the concert, the school will be having a
musician come on Friday December 11 at 11:00 to give a performance. So we
are looking forward to that!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jone and Mrs. McBride

O Canada / One World Drumming

I am so very excited for tomorrow!

Hometown Music will be visiting our school and we will be recording O Canada in celebration of the flag of Canada's 50th birthday, with hopes to break a world record!!

We are asking that you wear RED or WHITE tomorrow... or you could wear CALGARY or CANADA themed clothing.  (Calgary flames, Canada Day etc)  Your Cranston t-shirts would work wonderfully too!

Recording will begin at 8:20am and all those with returned permission slips will be invited to attend.

If you are looking to squeeze in some last minute practicing, here is the link again

Tomorrow afternoon we will wrap up our One World Drumming residency with a concluding concert.  The Peace Wing and AM Kindergarten will perform at 1pm and the Hope & Harmony Wings with PM Kindergarten at 2pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Love,
Mrs.McBride

Pinwheels For Peace

On Monday morning we will be celebrating with our Pinwheels for Peace.  We selected the peace song Nothing More to be sung at the assembly.  If you wanted to practice, CLICK HERE  The students sang this song at a few assemblies and it is now one of our favourite peace songs.

O CANADA

I wanted to post again to let you know a little more about the Canadian Flag project.  Hometown Music is also taping a documentary to go along with their cross Canada tour.  They are hoping to have a student share some of their thoughts on what the Canadian Flag means to Calgary and Calgarians.  Below are a few questions they would love to have a student answer.  If you are interested, please do your research and record your findings.  You can submit it to me any day from now until Monday, September 28th.  It can be written, typed or recorded ( audio or visual )  One or two lucky students will selected to share their findings.

Some questions your presentation can answer include:
(Only use two or three questions)
  1. What does the Canadian flag mean to your hometown?
  2. What building first flew the Canadian flag in your community? What day? Who was there?
  3. What are some important or landmark buildings in your hometown the flag flies and why?
  4. How do you celebrate National Flag of Canada Day? How will you celebrate next year?
  5. What are special moments when people gathered around the flag in your community?
  6. At what hometown events or celebrations is our flag displayed or waved?
  7. Are there any famous Canadians that live or have lived in your hometown? What do you think
the flag of Canada means to them?
  8. What historic activities took place in your hometown that involved the Canadian flag?
  9. Are there people from your hometown who have a historic connection to the flag?

WELCOME BACK CRANSTON FRIENDS!!!

A new school year is underway here at Cranston School and I am just so excited to get back in the classroom with you all!  September is always a busy month and it's half gone already!

Early last week I entered our name with hopes of being selected into a nation wide project in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the flag of Canada.   Today I received confirmation that WE GOT PICKED!!!  I am VERY EXCITED to announce that we are one of two schools in Calgary that get to be a part of what may be the largest national recording of O Canada ever produced!!!

Hometown Music is touring across the country making stops at 82 schools where they record the students singing O Canada.  All of these recordings will be layered together to create one finalized version of school children of Canada united in song.  I'm just so excited that we get to be involved.

You can learn more about the project HERE.

Students who are practicing can click to practice O CANADA here.

We are also busy preparing for our Terry Fox assembly and run.  We have adapted some of the lyrics of Rachael Platten's "Fight Song" to serve as our theme song for this year.  I am having issues with my webpage where I normally have our lyrics so I will post them here for now and update the other page when the issue is resolved.

This link is for the original version of FIGHT SONG with lyrics.

This link is for an INSTRUMENTAL version (No one singing but you!)

Here is our version, click the instrumental and sing along!

Terry’s Fight Song

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song______
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else belie----ves
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Making friends and I'm chasing dreams
Everybody's running with me
for Terry’s Dream
It’s Terry’s Dream
Been 35 years since he’s been home
There's a fire burning in our bones
Still believe
Yeah we still believe

All those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song_____
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else belie----ves
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me______
A lot of fight left in me_____

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match     (WAIT)

But I can make an explosion**

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song____
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else belie----ves
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

No I've still got a lot of fight left in me.

We will sing this at our kick-off assembly on September 22nd.

Looking so forward for both of these things and much, much more!!

Thanks for reading!!

Love,
Mrs. McBride
